Benedict Arnold is perhaps America's most infamous traitor. He was also a valiant military leader and a friend of General George Washington. During the battle of Lexington and Concord, Arnold was inspired to join the cause of the revolution. His reason for becoming involved can be summed up in this quote from him: Good God, are the Americans all asleep and tamely giving up their Liberties?" For the next few years he was a valuable commander in the Continental Army and he was personally responsible for several key American victories. He was however despised by his fellow officers. General Gates called him "a pompous little fellow" and several officers hated his impulsive attitude which coincidentally helped him to achieve many of his victories.
After several years of service he was wounded in battle and General Washington named him Commandant of Philadelphia. While there he got remarried, made poor business decisions and fell into debt. While faced with mounting debt, increased political pressure, and unsure of the possibility of promotion he made the decision to help the British in return for financial gain. His plan was discovered and he immediately fled to England. The British took advantage of his knowledge and expertise and made him a Brigadier General. In 1801 he died in London, England penniless and without a country to call his own.
So why the history lesson on Benny? Well it appears that some members of the city council believe that there is a "Benedict Arnold" in our midst. So I ask, who is the traitor? Is it the person who seeks out public information from our government or is it the person who tries to hide the truth from the people? Is it the citizen who asks uncomfortable questions or the person who thinks they know what's best for the citizens?
You tell me. If I am the traitor I ought to be stopped. If I am the patriot then let us gather together and find the traitors. All I ask is "are the Americans all asleep?"
I think that it's silly to consider you a traitor or a patriot. (And I didn't think that it was you that the earlier comment was referring to, but an "insider.") Offering a forum of public comment for local politics is important, and having a moderator necessary. So, I'd like to hear more from our city council members directly and less criticism about having the issues made public. -Carolyn Durant (and sorry that it keeps calling me "anonymous" - I don't feel like choosing another PROFILE)
