I had a wonderful experience a few days ago that really made a change in me. I went caroling. I had not been caroling in years and for a variety of reasons Christmas has lost a little bit of the magic it once held for me.
I should tell you that I am a great singer in the car or in the shower, but in public, without the accentuating acoustics of the bathroom, I am not the best singer. I also generally stay away from any form of intentional public humiliation. That being said I could not resist the overly cheerful invitation of good friends to join them.
It was an interesting experience. We had several planned stops and a few spur of the moment decisions to drop by other houses. Somewhere in the middle of it all I really started to enjoy myself. Whether it was the joy on the faces of the people as they opened their door or the simple reminder that it was more important to give, I do not know. Maybe even a little bit of both. What I do know is that I felt the spirit of Christmas and I had an amazing time. I found a little of what I had lost and I was once again reminded that even though I may sing a little flat this truly is the most wonderful time of the year.
I read that Thomas Paine was shunned for his anti-Christian views. Only six mourners attended his funeral. Not my kind of role model. inC3:16
