I love supporting my candidate or cause of choice. I love being involved in the political process and I love to learn all I can about the inspiring men who founded our great country. I enjoy the debate and the exchange of ideas. It is vitally important that everyone has the opportunity to express their opinion and to participate in the process.
I read a great quote today that sums up how important it is to ensure that even your enemy has the chance to be heard. It is, of course, from Thomas Paine. "He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself."
I marvel at the shortsightedness of those who feel that the only way that one can advance their own cause is to make sure the other side is not heard from. This is a dangerous route to take. While the battle may be won the war will be lost.
Let's all take a little time and think about guarding our enemy's rights. We will all be better off.
It kind of puts a different perspective on those who practice "dirty campaigning". I hadn't thought of it this way before. It really is a shame that there was some of this in Duvall this year. Makes you wonder what people really value.
ReplyDeleteI followed the recent elections and was suprised by the mailing peices and the flyers put out. You can make your own call on whether they were appropriate but I certainly was disturbed by the "big city" politics that happened.
ReplyDeleteYeah I was annoyed by it. I thought Duvall was a better town than that.
