I have been asked to put out my recommendations for this year’s general election. Most of you will have received your ballot by now so it seems like an appropriate time.

  1. Why a "no" on 1105?

  2. Of the two initiatives about alcohol I think 1100 is the better one. 1105 involves more government involvement. It allows the liquor control board to reset the tax rate on hard liquor and it adds new levels of government that are not there. In my opinion it provides for too much government interference in the market place.
I think 1100 is the better of the two.

  3. Thomas,
This is the best ballot ever. I've been voting in Washington State for almost 25 years and I've never seen a ballot so pro-small government.

I appreciate your clarification, but I can't bring myself to vote no on 1105. It reminds me of initiatives 601 and it's twin (was it 600?), remember those? Even though I had a clear favorite I voted yes for both because I didn't want to take the chance that having 2 choices would split the yes vote and neither would pass.

  5. Nice that you refrain from giving your advice at the polls...as the First Lady recently did. Ugh. I believe the State of Illinois falls under federal law like the rest of us - and that prohibits people from campaigning within a certain distance of the polls, right?

  6. Re: any initiative looking to create more government jobs...Vote No.

Particularly on anything that has to do with the economy - let the market determine where it is going to put its resources, as a dear friend of mine says. That is our best chance at digging ourselves out of this recession / depression grave. No more bail-outs, no more telling agencies 'you get this stimulus to create "green jobs"' - and then not even giving them a definition of what a "green job" is.

Let the private sector do its job. Government needs to loosen up the reins - we don't need more.

  7. As far as electioneering, or campaigning at the polling place, it is a definate no no. Yes it is true that the First Lady broke the law in Illinois last week when she did just that and Press Secretary Robert Gibbs basically laughed it off and basically said of course she would do that, why not?
I have actually had the police called on me once by a candidate my friend was running against,(we were far enough away from the polling place), but this is a serious matter.
One of the privileges of living in this great nation is that we have the ability to vote for our leaders and we can do this without harrassment or intimidation by anyone, including the First Lady of the United States.
There is much I could say about this topic but suffice it to say I am completely appalled at her actions and hope the prosecutor files ellectioneering charges against her. I don't want her thown in jail, but this is a perfect opportunity to remind the public that this behavior is not to be tolerated. Because if the First Lady can do it...Why can't I? Why can't you? where does it end, with campaign workers helping you fill out your ballot?
Get the camel's nose out of the tent right now!
