Labels

Labels. Do they really matter anymore? Do they mean anything? Does a D or an R after your name mean that you follow a certain set of ideals? Can you make decisions based on past affiliation?
These are many of the questions that we are faced with with each passing election. For example a political action committee put out a report saying that our city council had a 5-2 conservative tilt yet 4 of them endorsed a very liberal candidate for city council.
Another example is the most liberal member of the city council stated that there is no need to raise taxes and we should trim the government's waste.
So what are we to do? I suggest that we do not look at the letter behind their names, we don't look at who endorses them, and we don't take what they say for face value. I recommend that we look at their voting record and we hold them accountable for the things they say and do. It is time to remind them that we are paying attention to actions, not to labels.

  1. I am disappointed in some of the council members too. One of them claims to be a conservative with religous ties but then this person endorsed a candidate who was endorsed by NARAL (pro abortion group). I have no idea how this council member can justify that endorsement or how they could support somone so opposed to one of their basic beliefs.
I know that there is nothing that a single council member can do to change abortion laws in the city but it just shows a lack of credibility. This council member really has moved a long way from away from the principles they ran on. One good thing is it does make it easier for me to vote against them next time.

  2. I share your disapointment. I hope that by bringing these issues into the light that we will be able to get the citizens involved and make the government more accountable.

  4. Let's focus on the issue rather than attacking the messenger.

  5. Long pause between posts by the blogger since calling for citizens to "...look at (Council members) voting record and hold them accountable for the things they say and do." Funny thing about accountability for elected officials: if applied fairly it is unforgiving for all. One Duvall Council member, who has been highly critical of her colleagues in recent months, is experiencing that reality right now. Seems she didn't live up to an official commitment she made--not to mention a campaign promise made when she a candidate--to represent the best interests of the citizens she was elected to serve on the important issue of traffic improvement. Her response when called to account?: make excuses and then rely on the Mayor to defend her failed record. Shame on you, Council member, for not living up to the principles espoused on this blog. gonemoderate

  6. Welcome back "gone moderate".
I am glad that we hold our representatives responsible as long as we are respectful of them when we do this. We can be remind them of their duties and of there promises while still having manners.
Care to share your email to her?
As a side note I could only hope that the council members would live up the the ideals on this blog. We would be better off as a city if we did so.

  7. Why don't you tell us which council member it is and I will ask her to respond on the blog. Care to name names?
